New Romance Scam Tactics to Watch in 2026

Romance fraud now extends far beyond dating apps. Scammers build trust across social media, messaging platforms, and fraudulent investment sites.

Couple communicating as part of an online relationship

Modern romance scams are often long-term operations. The person may communicate daily, remember personal details, share photographs, and avoid asking for money until trust is firmly established. Some schemes involve teams managing multiple identities and conversations.

Unexpected contact outside dating apps

Scammers increasingly begin through social media comments, professional networks, hobby groups, and “wrong number” messages. The conversation is then moved quickly to an encrypted or private messaging app.

Video calls are no longer proof

Short, poor-quality calls, prerecorded video, face filters, and AI-generated media can make a false identity appear more convincing. A brief video appearance should not override inconsistencies in the person’s story.

Romance combined with investment coaching

A supposed partner may introduce a relative, mentor, or private platform offering cryptocurrency or forex returns. Early withdrawals may be allowed to build confidence before larger deposits are blocked.

Requests to receive or transfer money

Some victims are asked to move money, receive packages, open accounts, or convert funds to cryptocurrency. This can expose the victim to additional financial and legal risk.

Layered emergencies and release fees

Medical costs, travel problems, customs charges, business setbacks, military restrictions, and inheritance fees may appear one after another. Each payment creates a reason for the next.

Questions to ask before sending money

  • Have you independently verified the person’s identity and story?
  • Do their photographs appear under other names in reverse-image searches?
  • Are you being discouraged from discussing the relationship?
  • Are payments going to unrelated people, wallets, or businesses?
  • Would the request still make sense without the emotional relationship?
